Walking through your front door, to be cocooned by the warmth of your home is a feeling like no else. Sure, the people you surround yourself with can help create those warm and fuzzy feelings but we’d be kidding ourselves if we said material items didn’t have the same effect. Textures, lighting and most importantly colour are simple but effective changes that help to make an impact when renovating your home. We’ve listed some of our favourite colour trends from this year that will last you well into the future as well as tips on how to add interest to your white walls.
1. Get the basics right. Choosing the ideal white for your space:
If you think choosing a basic white for your walls doesn’t require much thought, think again. You’ll be bombarded with at least 30 shades of white varying from Whisper to Snowy Mountain, so there are a few deciding factors we need to consider before jumping in.
White is a tough colour to select as each white has either a green/grey base, grey/blue base or a yellow/beige base. Every tone of white works well in different surroundings, personally I like to use grey/blue white for new homes that have quite a cool palette and a slight yellow/beige base in older homes that have lot’s of charm and have a warmer palette.
How much natural light does your space see? If your space is deprived of daylight, consider a brighter shade of white to assist that daylight streaming through your windows with bouncing around that room.
2. Nature knows best, draw colour inspiration from outside your window:
Contrary to every early 00’s film, a feature wall needn’t scream at you when you enter a room. Don’t get me wrong, feature walls have their place in a home but there are ways we can subtly integrate colour and interest. Mother nature does it best. Bring the outdoors in by using punches of natural-based colours that you would likely see if you were to look out your window. This helps to add interest and depth to your space while also allowing you more options and flexibility when decorating as opposed to a highly pigmented colour choice. 3. If colour’s too risky, add texture:
Sometimes change can be scary, especially when it takes up an entire wall and stares you down on the daily. If you’re wanting a point of interest in your space but want to avoid a plain solid painted wall, which i highly suggest you do, consider adding texture. VJ panelling, wainscoting or interior brickwork are great non-intrusive ways to add interest to bare white walls and act as a great backdrop for displaying artworks to add that pop of colour. The added texture also makes the colour you paint the wall feel less intense.

To recap choose colours that are a natural pigment of what you see in nature will help create a soft feature, adding lot’s of texture through wall cladding helps make that colour choice feel less bold, and make sure you select a white that complements the type of home you are building or renovating.
