Our 5 Tips on Renovating Your Small Bathroom

Whether you’ve been stewing over the idea of renovating your bathroom for decades or you’ve recently felt the need to rip up those aggressively 70’s tiles, bathroom renovations can be daunting. This can be made particularly overwhelming when you don’t have much room to play with in the first place. You’ve also seen how stressed out both contestants and trades get during bathroom week on The Block so I bet that hasn’t given you much confidence either.

So, like taking on any new task in life it’s best to do your research first. Each bathroom renovation is unique, you may only want to give it a cosmetic makeover or perhaps you want to gut the whole space and wipe the slate clean. No matter the extent of your renovation, we will talk you through our top five tips before you jump into renovating your small bathroom.

Take your time

Like most good things in life, this will take time. ‘How much time?’ you ask, well it all depends on the extent of work and the underlying issues that might pop up along the way. Take your time collecting images and samples as inspiration for your new space. This is the exciting bit, cherish it! Even though the space you are working with is small, this doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Have fun! Spend some quality time getting to know your bathroom. What opportunities for storage can you create? Is there a layout that allows you get more out of the space? If you are struggling with this call in a professional… cough cough… I am talking about an interior designer here!

02

Ask professionals

Create a list of your local fitting and fixture suppliers, these are the specialists to get to know during the early planning stages of your renovation. Take the time to go in and ask for advice and feedback, there is no question that they haven’t heard before so go in with the confidence that they’re here to help make your dream Pinterest bathroom a reality. Shop around, not for the products themselves but for a salesperson you feel comfortable with, who you believe is going to support you through the process.

Get the basics right

Imagine icing a cake only to realise after you’ve popped the last decorative cherry on top that the sponge has collapsed in on itself. You’ve spent all of this time, money and emotional energy decorating this masterpiece to perfection all to have it crumble. The point of this messy metaphor is that not only has Grandma’s cake recipe let you down but it’s an essential reminder to get your foundations right. Hire a builder to inspect your bathroom before getting underway. This way any existing structural issues that need fixing can be done before you begin rebuilding your new space and more importantly before you define your budget.

Structural issues always cost more than you have budgeted for. Along with evaluating the bathroom as it stands, you need to get the main materials of the space right before moving onto the rest of your selections. We define the most important pieces of a bathroom from most used to least. Tiles, shower head, vanity benchtop and the hand basin are used most of all the fittings in your bathrooms so don’t skimp there!

Lay it out

Floor space is the largest obstacle when planning to renovate a smaller bathroom, so let’s consider designing vertically. Get creative with your layout, try working through a couple of possible layout’s until you achieve the one that best suits you. Think about your storage possibilities. Would face level storage ie. a shaving cabinet allow you to have a wall hung vanity instead of one to the floor to cater for your storage needs? The more floor you can see the larger your space will appear.

You many also need to consider compromising on some features. Maybe in order to fit that double shower, you have always dreamed of you may need to remove the bath? Define what is important to you first, then the rest might have to be compromised on.

Lighting & Colour

This one’s simple but oh so important. Choosing the right lighting and colours for a space can create the illusion of a larger room. Choose a lighter colour on 3 of the four walls, but on the wall you see as soon as you walk through the door pick something that packs a punch. Maybe it’s something darker, or a soft pattern or a bold colour? This contrast to the light walls will push that wall back, giving the illusion of a bigger room. Use feature lighting to emphasise an area too, wall sconces either side of a mirror drawers your eye to the mirror, and we all know mirrors make spaces look larger!
