Storage tips and tricks for your small laundry

by | Aug 1, 2021 | Advice

If there’s one thing I’m great at, it’s avoiding laundry.

I heard a rumour recently that throwing your jeans in the freezer is just as good (if not better) than drenching them in with your tighty whities. But even I feel that this may be a step too far.

So, to make the mundane a little less painful we’ve listed some design tricks and tips to help your small laundry feel like the inside of Mary Poppins bag, deceivingly roomy with the possibility of making chores just that little bit more enjoyable.

Take it to the ceiling

Just like any small space whether it be a bathroom, kitchen or in this case your laundry, it’s important not to forget that where we lack in floor space we can make up for it vertically. Use ALL of your walls and bring the cabinetry to the ceiling. The more storage the better! Consider stacking your washer and dryer rather than taking up valuable floor space, use this lower space for hideaway laundry hampers for easy access.

Incorporate hanging rails

Put away that rickety clothes horse and say goodbye to peg marks on your good blouses. A great way to integrate hanging space is to incorporate a hanging rail over your sink and even under an overhead cabinet. Hanging rails can be a sexy feature too! Timber or powder-coated metal rods are a great way to add character and depth to a small space.

Hide that mess

The key to a great space is to be brutally honest and know what works for you, a design that caters to your lifestyle, not a lifestyle that caters to your design. Profound statements aside, this can mean knowing you have a bad habit of throwing dirty laundry on the floor for the world to witness. The Solution? Hidden Laundry Hampers. Integrated pull-out hampers are an easy and discrete addition to your laundry cabinetry while saving the fuss of rogue laundry baskets. Integrated fold-out ironing boards are another great way to save space on those classically bulky items.

Add Hooks

Where possible to store anything vertically, seize the opportunity! Incorporate a few small hooks for any hanging bits and bobs to save yourself some cabinet storage space. Detachable wall baskets are a great way to cater to your needs over time, add more or take them away as your needs change.

Let’s hope these tips give you some inspiration whether you’re designing a laundry from scratch or planning on renovating the one you have. As always, if you’re needing personalised help don’t forget to call in someone who does this for a living (Me!).
